Rapper Karima 2G recently released a video for her new song ‘”Refugees” as part of World Refugee day on June 20th. World Refugee Day is dedicated to raising awareness of the situation of refugees throughout the world.
For years, many countries and regions have been holding their own Refugee Days and even Weeks. In 2001, the UN General Assembly, decided that June 20th would be celebrated as World Refugee Day to coincide with Africa Refugee Day.
The video showcases Karima 2G (full name Karima Gehnyei; 2G stands for “second generation”) wading through sea waters and drifting on a boat as she raps the socially conscious lyrics, “Run away, across the nation, find a solution, refugees, let them go”.
Karima was born in Italy to Liberian immigrants.
“This song was written in memory of all those Refugees and Migrants who are in Europe still suffering and dying at our borders. Prime Ministers and Politicians all over Europe are not willing to search for solutions to one of the biggest tragedies of our time: the suffering and dying of thousands of refugees in the Mediterranean Sea” she told OkayAfrica.
